the School of choice for North Durban

Top Results
Northwood is consistently recognised as one of the top public boys’ schools in KwaZulu Natal based on the matric results – a testament to academics remaining the primary focus of the school. The rich and varied academic programme offers a general formative education while at the same time emphasising the personal development of every learner in small classes.

Class Sizes
In Grades eight and nine, the average number in each class is twenty-seven in the three accelerated classes and twenty-five in the mixed ability classes. In Grades ten to twelve, class size ranges between twenty and twenty eight, depending on the subject and the subject sets.

Subject Choices
All matric subject combinations qualify learners for university admission.  Each learner must study English Home Language plus either Afrikaans or Zulu First Additional Language, as well as Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy and Life Orientation. The subject package is completed by the addition of one subject from each of the following rows:

Life Science Accounting Business Studies
Physical Science Engineering Graphics and Design Geography
Geography History
History Information Technology
Life Science
Visual Art

During their first two years at Northwood, learners study a range of subjects, enabling them to make informed subject choices for their final phase of schooling and tertiary education.

Academic Facilities
Northwood’s large campus boasts sweeping views of the Indian Ocean from many of its state-of-the art classrooms and computer, science and technology laboratories. Excellent academic facilities enhance the learning programme. Computers are used extensively for teaching subjects like Computer Aided Design and Photoshop, while interactive whiteboards assist in teaching the more abstract concepts.

Regular Assessment
Regular assessment aids teachers, learners and parents to gauge a learner’s academic progress. Control tests are written throughout the year, with examinations in June and November. Trial Examinations prepare matriculants for the National Senior Certificate.

Personal Development
Emphasis is placed on the personal development of each learner. Grade Tutors monitor the work, attitude, behaviour and appearance of each learner. The tutors regularly report to management, allowing for focused attention and intervention. Full-time school counsellors assist teachers and tutors with any problems that may arise.

Building on the Past
Sound Northwood has produced many leaders in the fields of Business, Science, Academics and the Arts, as seen in the calibre of the recipients of the Knights’ Circle of Valour Awards each year.

The staff and management are committed to maintaining this proud tradition.
